Reconciliation Action Plan launched

Engineers Australia launched its Reconciliation Action Plan for 2011-2015 on 9 August in Sydney. The RAP is its response and commitment to Australia’s Closing the Gap strategy, which aims to reduce Indigenous disadvantage with respect to life expectancy, child mortality, access to early childhood education, educational achievement and employment outcomes.
The RAP details steps and priorities Engineers Australia will undertake to assist in helping to achieve Indigenous equality and to help build positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

Notice of Annual General Meeting

The Ninety First Annual General Meeting of the Institution of Engineers Australia will be held in the Canberra Room, Hyatt Hotel Canberra, Commonwealth Avenue, Yarralumla ACT 2600 on Thursday 24 November at 2.00 pm.
The agenda will be:
  1. Confirmation of Minutes of the Ninetieth Annual General Meeting held in Canberra on 25 November 2010.
  2. Presentation of Annual Report and Financial Statements for 2010/2011.
  3. Election of Auditors for 2012.
  4. Business raised under Bye-Law 51.2 of Supplemental Royal Charter 2006.
  5. Presentation of Engineers Australia Awards for 2011.
  6. Presentation of Certificates to Honorary Fellows 2011.
  7. Presentation of Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal for 2011.

Nominations sought for Deputy


Engineers Australia is calling for nominations for the position of its National Deputy President for 2012.
Bye-law 32.4.3 requires that the National Deputy President shall be an Honorary Fellow or Fellow of Engineers Australia who has served at least one term as a delegate to the National Congress.
Nomination forms may be downloaded from Engineers Australia’s website www.engineersaustralia.org.au/ndp2012.
Nominations open at 9.00 am Monday 12 September 2011 and close at 5.00pm AEDST 14 October 2011.

Cooperation on submarine conference

The Submarine Institute of Australia and Engineers Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering collaboration with the Australian Society for Defence Engineering, which is one of Engineers Australia’s Technical Societies, for the inaugural SIA Conference on Submarine Science, Technology and Engineering in Adelaide in November. The MoU specifically covers the processes for peer-review of technical papers that will be published for the conference and be available internationally thereafter.

Excellence in Tasmania

Tasmania Division announced three winners at its 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards function. The winners were the Catagunya Dam Restoration Project, entered by Hydro Tasmania; the Davis Station Antarctica Living Quarters, entered by the Australian Antarctic Division and Hyder Consulting; and the BRA Automated Pellet Handling Facility, entered by Tasmanian Consulting Service and Botanical Resources Australia.
Individual awards were presented to Dr Jane Sargison (Professional Engineer of the Year), Michael Sylvester (Young Professional Engineer of the Year) and Ron Bessell (Engineering Officer of the Year).

Emma Charlton, associate director of AECOM, has been named Queensland Division’s 2011 Young Professional Engineer of the Year. She manages the company’s acoustical group in Brisbane.
