Female scholarship winners
The Women in Engineering National Committee has selected five scholarship winners to attend the 15th International Conference for Women Engineers and Scientist (ICWES) being held in Adelaide in July. They are:
- Jillian Kilby – civil engineer, managing director of JL Kilby
- Danuta Kucharska – PhD student at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Melbourne
- Kelly Stokes – technical services engineer, Townsville City Council
- Kate Simmonds – project manager and environmental engineer, CH2MHill
- Paula Sothern – senior transport planning engineer, Department of Transport Western Australia.
Young Engineers of the Year sought
Nominations are now open for the Canberra Division 2011 Young Engineers of the Year Awards. These awards apply to practising engineers under the age of 35 years. They seek to acknowledge and reward young professional engineers, young engineering technologists and young engineering officers.

Nominations are now open for the 2011 David Dewhurst Award for outstanding service in biomedical engineering. The award is given to a professional biomedical engineer who has made a significant contribution to the discipline. To nominate online click here.

Nominations for coastal engineering awards
Nominations are now open for the D N Foster Awards which are to encourage engineering students to pursue career opportunities in coastal and/or ocean engineering. Up to four awards will be offered to final-year undergraduate engineering students. Each winner will receive free registration and up to $1000 worth of travel and accommodation to attend the Coasts & Ports Conference in Perth on 28-30 September 2011. Applications close 29 April.

Nominations for chemical engineering awards
The Australian and New Zealand Federation of Chemical Engineering is now seeking nominations for the 2011 Chemical Engineering Awards of Excellence. The awards provide a showcase for outstanding achievement in chemical engineering. The awards will be presented at Chemeca 2011 in Sydney on 18-21 September. Personal protective clothing in the spotlight
The Women in Engineering National Committee is organising a photo competition to raise awareness of women's personal protective equipment (PPE). The committee is developing some prototype PPE which will be launched at the 15th International Conference for Women Engineers and Scientists in Adelaide on 19-22 July as part of a fashion parade. The photo competition is about ill-fitting PPE. The best four photos will each win a $100 gold movie pass and all finalists will be displayed at the conference. Entries should be sent to gemma.hamilton@gmail.com by 20 June.
Photo competition
Engineers Australia magazine is inviting submissions for its annual national photo competition titled Focus on engineering. The photos should encapsulate the essence of engineering in its many facets, for instance working in unusual environments, involvement in exciting projects, structures blending into the environment or engineering gone wrong. Photos must have been taken after 1 January 2009. Computer graphics are not eligible. The winner will receive a Canon EOS digital camera valued at $1700. The winning photo and a selection of the best entries will be published in the August issue of Engineers Australia magazine.

The National Committee for Women in Engineering is calling for applications for representatives to the Civil College, National Committee for Engineering Associates (NCEAA) and National Committee for Engineering Technologists. Journals on earthquakes and renewable energy
Earthquake engineering is the subject of the latest issue of the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering. Vol
11 No 3 contains 10 papers on seismic design, including an
investigation of the failure of the Newcastle Workers Club in the 1989
earthquake and the performance of unreinforced masonry buildings during
the earthquake in Christchurch last year. The latest issue of the Australian Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vol 8 No 1, is devoted to renewable energy and smart energy systems.
