NEWS AND NOTICES Defence procurement needs engineers In a submission to the Senate Inquiry into Defence Procurement, Engineers Australia has reaffirmed concerns about risks associated with inadequate assessments of engineering and technical aspects of defence procurements. Engineers Australia’s acting chief executive Rupert Grayston welcomed the opportunity last week to contribute to the focus on defence procurement by the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence & Trade. “In the face of increasing competition for professional engineering skills, ensuring that Defence has the ongoing capability to be an informed buyer in relation to engineering products and systems cannot be compromised. “Maintaining a high level of professional engineering input, at all levels of contracting and procurement across Defence management, is at the core of tackling the balance between the needs for a highly sophisticated technical capability and budget constraints. “The numerous big-ticket items that Defence procurement involves must be backed by resourcing access to well-informed and candid engineering advice,” Grayston said. Input invited on competency standards Engineers Australia is inviting input from the engineering community to the Australian Engineering Competency Standards Stage 2 draft, which can be viewed at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/stage2revision. Comments can be submitted on the site. More recognition needed for chartered status “There is no benefit in becoming chartered” was one of the recurring comments in a survey conducted by Engineers Australia’s Young Engineers Australia National Committee earlier this year. Other major themes included:
Those who participated had the chance to win an iPad and the winners were Rebecca Latimer and Justin Sazegar. Discussion forums were also held at most Division offices and an iPad was again awarded to the best response to the above question. The winner was Leon Czechowicz. The findings from the forums and survey will be provided to Engineers Australia National Council for action. For comment and additional input email yea@engineersaustralia.org.au or go to www.engineersaustralia.org.au/yea. Regional engineers wanted Engineers Australia has declared 2012 the Year of Regional Engineering. To introduce the Year, Engineers Australia magazine is planning a special feature on regional engineering in the January issue of the magazine. The magazine is inviting engineers working in regions outside major cities in Australia or overseas to talk about their work and their experiences – the benefits and the challenges of relying on their own devices, at times cut off from the major supply lines and professional support. Engineers interested in participating in this feature can email editorial@engineersmedia.com.au. Technical Journals out now ![]() The latest editions of three Technical Journals have just been published. Vol 9 No1 of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering, Vol 13 No1 of Transport Engineering in Australia and Vol 15 No1 of the Australian Journal of Water Resources are now available. To download individual papers from these journals free of charge, Engineers Australia members can log in at www.engineeraustralia.org.au, then go to Resources and Library, Online Library and Journals & Transactions. For non-members to purchase individual papers, go to www.eabooks.com.au, then eJournals. To purchase complete printed copies of the journals contact Pam Chenery at Engineers Media by email pchenery@engineersmedia.com.au Building modelling guide available NATSPEC, the national building specification service, has released the National Building Information Modelling (BIM) Guide for the building and construction industry. It is freely available at www.natspec.com.au. The objective of the guide, used in conjunction with a Project BIM Brief, is to clarify what is meant when BIM is required on a project. The Guide can also be used as a planning tool by consultants to clarify the services they propose to provide when preparing bids for projects. Comments and input can be forwarded to bim@natspec.com.au. New standards for air handling systems Standards Australia has further refined its suite of standards for air handling systems. “The objective of the new standards is to provide a performance-based approach to air handling system maintenance to assist users in the control of microorganisms,” said Colin Blair, CEO of Standards Australia. The new standards update AS/NZS 3666 (parts one, two and three, with a new part four).
