NEWS AND NOTICES Engineers Australia appoints new director Engineers Australia has appointed John Anderson as its new director for engineering practice and continuing professional development, based at the National Office in Canberra. A civil engineer from Sydney University with a master of engineering science in construction/project management from the University of NSW, Anderson joins Engineers Australia from UGL Infrastructure in Sydney where he was the general manager for quality and compliance. Before moving to Sydney he held several senior positions in Canberra including at the ACT Department of Urban Services, the Master Builders Association and ACT Public Works and Services. He has also been involved with Engineers Australia in various roles. He was president of Canberra Division and chair of the National Committee for Quality in Engineering. He will start in his new position on 2 May. “I am extremely pleased that John has agreed to join us,” said acting chief executive Rupert Grayston. New group for oil and gas The Queensland Oil & Gas Group (Facilities & Pipelines) will be launched on 12 May in Brisbane. At the event the inaugural committee will be introduced and the Strategic Plan for 2011 discussed. Special guest speakers will include representatives from the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Australian Pipeline Industry Association, Overseas Qualified Engineers Support Group, Board of Professional Engineers Queensland, and the Department of Immigration & Citizenship. Also present will be the engineering managers of four major energy companies with LNG projects in Queensland. Inquiries: qld.engineersaustralia.org.au or phone 07 3832 3749. Explanatory panel for Perth freeway An interpretive panel celebrating Stage 1 of the Mitchell Freeway was unveiled on 18 March at the Narrows Interchange site. The project had previously been declared a National Engineering Landmark by Engineering Heritage Australia. Constructed between 1964 and 1973 the works comprised three sections – the Narrows Interchange, the Central Section between Mount and Murray Streets, and the Hamilton Interchange at the northern end. The Narrows Interchange roads and bridges were designed by Main Roads Western Australia staff, headed by Gilbert Marsh, chief bridge engineer from 1957 to 1985. The Central Section and the Hamilton Interchange were designed by De Leuw Cather of Chicago, which also had specific expertise in geometric road design, with selected Main Roads staff as part of the design team. The most difficult section of Stage 1 was the Narrows Interchange. Following an overseas study tour in 1961 to investigate techniques to consolidate the mud layers in the reclaimed Mounts Bay, Marsh was responsible for the installation of 43,000 vertical sand drains which successfully stabilised the site. The scale of this consolidation process was unique in Australian and probably in world civil engineering construction at the time. The panel was jointly unveiled by former commissioner of Main Roads and current governor of WA Dr Ken Michael, current managing director of Main Roads Menno Henneveld and Professor Mark Bush, Engineers Australia WA Division president. ![]() At the unveiling of the interpretive panel were (l-r) Professor Mark Bush, Menno Henneveld and Dr Ken Michael. Eminent speakers Several distinguished engineers are currently touring Australia as part of Engineers Australia's Eminent Speakers program.
