NEWS AND NOTICES

Australian aid workers to Horn of Africa

Humanitarian agency RedR Australia has deployed 11 relief workers to Ethiopia, South Sudan and Kenya to help alleviate the devastating effects of the drought in that region. Food logistics specialists, a camp site planner, and an expert in water, sanitation and hygiene are included in the broad range of skills and experience provided, under the coordination of the World Food Programme, UNICEF and UNHCR.
More disaster relief personnel on RedR Australia’s Register are on standby to respond to the escalating crisis, said Alan McLean, CEO of RedR Australia.
“Pressure is being placed on existing camps and new camps have been established to care for those in greatest need.” High levels of acute malnutrition are widespread and more than 11 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are in need of emergency assistance, he said.
“Australian drought experience is extremely valuable following the failure of two rainy seasons in the affected countries. Deployment of carefully selected and professionally prepared personnel is a most appropriate Australian contribution,” he said.
Further details about RedR Australia’s Standby Register and training courses can be found at www.redr.org.au.

Feedback sought on leadership in WA

The WA branch of Engineers Australia’s Centre for Engineering Leadership and Management is seeking input from members about how the organisation can take a greater leadership role in assisting governments and industry in skills development and infrastructure planning.

The specific questions it is asking include:
  • Who are the engineering and community leaders that should be involved in contributing to the strategic thinking and influence that can bring about positive change?
  • What are the initiatives of panels, groups and societies that can support a long-term strategy for development of expertise and infrastructure?
  • Should Engineers Australia convene a “Committee for WA” to guide these initiatives?
For feedback email celmwa@engineersaustralia.org.au by 1 August.

Dream job deadline closing

The deadline is approaching for engineers to tell us about their dream jobs. We are looking for jobs that are unusual, perhaps in niche areas where you wouldn’t expect an engineer to work, or where the job combines profession and passion like in testing sports gear.
We are planning to publish the most interesting dream jobs later this year.
Send a note describing your job and why you think it’s your dream job to dgeorg@engineersmedia.com.au or phone 02 9438 1533. The deadline is Friday 22 July.
