NEWS AND NOTICES High-speed train proposal welcomed Engineers Australia has welcomed the feasibility study for a high-speed rail along the east coast of Australia, which was released by the federal government last month. “Australia’s population in 2050 is likely to be in the range of 35 million to 42 million people and this will accelerate the demand for all transport services, in particular on the east coast,” said Engineers Australia Infrastructure Report Card Committee member and past national president Ian Pedersen. “There should be no time lost in the identification of potential technological options to bring to life the most efficient and sustainable infrastructure outcomes,” he said. A more detailed article on the rail proposal will appear in the September issue of Engineers Australia magazine. John Monash bridge honoured On 9 August the Janevale Bridge at Laanecoorie in Victoria celebrated its 100th birthday. An interpretation panel and heritage recognition marker were unveiled by David Eltringham, immediate past president of Victoria Division, and councillor Allen Brownbill representing Loddon Shire Council. The bridge is the longest reinforced concrete bridge designed by John (later Sir John) Monash’s Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Construction Company. The council accepted the Monash offer on 12 March 1910; work commenced in October and the bridge was tested satisfactorily in July 1911. In the 1930s the CRB strengthened the bridge and in 1986 VicRoads gave it a major facelift.
